John Remenda Obituary

John Remenda, 71 of Sturgis, SK. passed away at Yorkton hospital on November 13th.

John was born to John and Sophie (Rewakowsky) Remenda on September 22nd, 1948 at their farm near Norquay, SK where they resided for much of his childhood, along with siblings Richard and Candy. John suffered severe, debilitating arthritis starting at age 6 which caused him to miss much school as a child.

In the winter of 1967 John met his future wife Leona Jansen of the Danbury area at the restaurant she worked at in Norquay. They married on March 20th, 1969 in New Westminister BC where they resided at the time. They returned to live in Sturgis in 1972 and spent the rest of their years there. John and Leona had 4 children. Sheldon, Nadine, Maureen, and Steven.

Although John suffered great limitations due to his disability he never shied away from work and spent 17 years working for CNR as a machine operator, a job that took him to many interesting places over the years and stories of his CN buddies over the years were favorites of his. In the early 70's he worked as a bartender at the Black Bear Inn in Sturgis, a job that required him to wear a bow tie. He also worked at Ron Skogen's repair shop in Sturgis over the years, helped on Peter Kateryniuk's farm, and in his retirement years worked for good friends Mike and Kyle Korneychuk on their farms.

John loved country life and being on the farm. He enjoyed hunting with his boys and friends and left us with many great and not so great hunting stories and fiascos. John loved kids and babysitting and thoroughly enjoyed spoiling his grandkids. He babysat Maureen's boys full time on the farm right from when they were wee babies. John also had a passion for garage and auction sales and even thought it was okay to dicker prices in retail stores. He collected many interesting finds throughout the years. John also loved hockey with his boys and was very involved at the rink over those years as coach, assistant coach and referee in chief as well as serving on the rink board.

John became seriously Ill in September after fall and succumbed to his illness in sleep on November 13th.

John was predeceased by his parents John and Sophie, sister-in-law Beverly (Antoniuk) Jansen, grandson Lane German in 2010 and son Sheldon in 2013.

John is survived by his wife of 50 years, Leona, Siblings Rick and Candy, daughters Nadine and Maureen and son Steven. Grandchildren Brendon, Arlee, Ryan, Kari, Ashly, Brayly and Tanner and Jax.  Great grandchildren Tera, Grayson, Brian and Odin and many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.
