Alex Dergousoff Obituary

The family of Mr. Alex Dergousoff, beloved husband of the late Nellie Dergousoff, of Preeceville and formerly of the Dernic/Buchanan District, announce his passing on Monday, January 1, 2024. He was 92 years of age.

A Memorial Service, to re-unite him and Nellie, will be held in the spring of 2024.

Memorial donations in memory of Alex Dergousoff may be made to the Preeceville Long Term Care Auxilliary as gifts of remembrance.

Alex was born on May 27, 1931, to Wasyl and Mary (nee Kalmakoff) Dergousoff on the family farm in the south-west part of Dernic/Buchanan District. He attended school in Dernic until grade 8, all the while learning what farming was. For added family income he would walk to the Dernic elevator in summer to sweep out the anex. He also worked on the pipeline for added income. Providing for all family was a part of his heritage.

Alex met his future bride, Nellie, at a dance in Hazel Dell. She joked about initially being asked to it by his cousin but was smitten by Alex. A romance ensued. Several visits and letters were written during their courtship. Alex sold one of his yearling heifers to buy Nell an engagement ring and in 1963, they were married.

Alex and Nellie lived at his family farm in a small house behind his parents. Together they enjoyed curling-taking many trophies with their teams. They were beautiful dancers who seemed to float as they danced. Alex enjoyed hunting and raising cattle.

In 1969 they welcomed their first child, a girl, Ronnell. The same year they had the opportunity to purchase Nellie’s family farm. There they raised up to 100 plus head of cattle. In 1972 they welcomed another daughter, April. Alex continued to farm the land in Buchanan while tending to the land and cattle in Preeceville.

Alex was a very quiet, kind, gentle person. He will be remembered as being a hardworking, honest man who rarely got mad. He loved hunting and would say “horns make thin soup.” He spent many a day at Twin Lakes casting. If offered, enjoyed the bigger lakes in a boat. This sometimes got him into trouble with Nell for staying out to late.

Alex had a stroke in 2017. After Nell’s health began to fail, she was too weak to care for him so he entered the Preeceville and District Long Term Care in 2021. He made many friends among the staff. Nell joined him briefly in LTC before her passing.

Alex loved watching WWF, took the bowling trophy a couple times, and developed a liking for Bingo. Showing off his prizes always made him so proud. Every Sunday he would attend the church services no matter the denomination.

Alex is predeceased by his wife, Nellie (Hagemeister); parents, Wasyl and Mary (Kalmakoff) Dergousoff; sisters, Irene (Delmar) Myrfield, Lorna (Wayne) Wishlow, Pearl (Fred) Smorodin and brothers, Russell (Anne) and Sam (Joyce) Dergousoff.

He is survived by his daughters, Ronnell Latham and April (Andrian) Makowsky; grandchildren, Alixandrea (Neil) Clark, Larissa Makowsky, Mathew Makowsky, Jordan Makowsky; great-grandson, Ried Clark along with many nieces, nephews and relatives.

Alex and Nell’s wishes are to not have a service at the time of their passing. They wanted to be celebrated when they are reunited.
