Alex was born July 8, 1925, on the Mastrachuk Homestead to parents, Harry and Mary Mastrachuk, the youngest son of 8 children. Alex grew up on the family farm ½ mile south of Brookview School. He attended Brookview School starting at the age of 5 until 1940, quitting at the age of 15.

In 1941, at the age of 16, he began working for The Pas Lumber Company at Reserve during the winter months until the spring of 1955, starting as a setter, then sawyer and slasher sawyer. In July, 1944, he received a diploma from the Musker Engineering Institute Winnipeg in gas and electric welding. From 1956 to 1959, he worked during the winter months for The Pas Lumber Company at Prince George, BC, as a cat operator.

During the summer months he farmed the Mastrachuk Homestead taking it over in 1946 and farming and residing on it until 2008. Farming was his first love but due to hardships he worked away from home first for George Boychuk, setting up a sawmill in Sturgis for Sask Forest Products, and then working as a millwright until 1976. In 1977 he worked seasonal with Wisoley Building as a carpenter until 1982. He then did various carpentry jobs, building garages, sheds, patios, decks and home projects.

He sold the family farm to his nephew, Merle, in 2007, and moved to Sturgis Seniors Housing and then to Hudson Bay Seniors Housing. He lived on his own until the fall of 2022 when he moved to Level 4 Care Home in Arborfield and then Hudson Bay.

After growing up together, living across the road from each other as young children, he married Doris Pantiuk in 1949. Together they raised 3 children: Barbara (Martin) Prokop, Audrey (Robert) Rupchan and Richard (Denise) Mastrachuk. In their retirement they enjoyed fishing, visiting and playing cards with friends and growing their garden.

Alex was predeceased by his wife, Doris and his siblings, Nettie (Demetrick), Polly (Petras), Mike, John, Rhea (Tanner), Willie and Lois (Melnychuk).
