Alida Adrianna (Drummond) Burroughs

The family of Mrs. Alida Burroughs of Preeceville and district, beloved wife of the Late Robert Burroughs passed away on Tuesday, May 30, 2022. She was 101 years of age.

Alida was born in the Kelvington district on November 8, 1920 to John and Mary (nee Buurman) Drummond. She was the younger sister to Alma and Philip. Her brother Douglas was born a year later.

When Alida was 5 years old, her mother passed away, leaving her dad to raise the 4 children himself.

Alida went to work at an early age. During the war years she worked in Vancouver. Upon returning to the Kelvington area, she started working for the Willard Hall Lumber Company as a cook in the lumber camps. This is where she met Robert (Bob) Burroughs. They were married on September 29, 1947 and moved to Esterhazy where Bob and his brother-in-law owned and operated a dealership/garage. In 1953 they moved to the farm east of Usherville.

Alida was a hard-working housewife, raising three children while tending a large garden and working in the field at haying time. Lambing and calving season were a very busy time of the year for her.

Alida was an avid reader who enjoyed her murder mystery novels and crossword puzzles. She would often be discovered reading the dictionary. Alida was very knowledgeable on many subjects.

Alida was predeceased by her husband, Robert; sister, Alma; her brothers, Philip and Doug; and her children, Roger and Muriel.

She was dearly loved and will be remembered always by her children, Linda Szostak (Maurice Neill), Keith (Joanne) Burroughs; son-in-law, Carmen Carnegie; her grandchildren, Scott (Lisa) Kucharyshen, Shawn (Deanna Miller) Szostak, Robert Carnegie, Ashley Carnegie, and her great-grandchildren, Keiran and Avery Kucharyshen, and Emmalyn and Ceanna Szostak.

Memorials in memory of Alida may be made to the Etoimame Cemetery Fund as gifts of remembrance.
