Elsie (Anne) Michaluk was born on July 16, 1940, in Preeceville, SK. Her parents, Steve and Mary Sawka had two other children, older brother, Myron, and younger sister, Pauline. Steve passed away when Anne was a young girl. It was years later that Mary met and married Gordon Hanson. Together they had five children, Glennis, Daryl, Diane, Gary and Ivan.
Anne took her schooling at Beaver Bluff School which was ½ a mile from the family farm. At a young age she started working down the road at the neighbour, Ray Lebo’s, on his turkey farm as well as helped take care of the children. When she was old enough, she started working at the Golden Leaf Café in Preeceville.
Anne met John at a wedding in Endeavour where they fell in love and shortly after, on July 18, 1959, were married at the Ukrainian Catholic Church in Preeceville, with Father Chorney officiating. After their marriage, they moved to Regina where they both worked for a year or so. Their love for farming drew them back to John’s parents’ family farm where they resided and had three children, Terrance, Travis and Thomas. In 1970 they moved into Preeceville where they rented a home until theirs was built in 1972.
Anne started working at Robinson Clothing Store which was owned by Steve and Mabel Gulka. Years later she worked in the grocery side of the store that was known then as Family Foods. Anne worked at the store as it changed from Family Foods to Payfair and then Tomboy. In 1990 Anne retired.
Anne loved working in her garden and with her flowers. She was always in the kitchen making perogies, borsht, cabbage rolls and fresh buns. No one ever left Anne’s hungry. Over the years, Anne was very involved with the Ukrainian Catholic Church and with helping to prepare food for bake sales and fall suppers.
Anne passed away peacefully on October 8th with her family by her side. She will be forever missed…but always in our hearts.
She is survived by her husband of 66 years, John; sons, Travis (Korinne) and Thomas (Pattie); grandson, Bradley (Andrea); great-granddaughters, Addisyn and Aubry; sister, Pauline Davidson; brothers, Daryl, Gary (Claudette) and Ivan Hanson, as well as numerous nephews and nieces.
Anne was predeceased by her son Terrance; her dad, Steve Sawka; mom, Mary; step-dad, Gordon Hanson; in-laws, William and Julia Michaluk; sisters, Glennis and Diane; and brother, Myron.
