Carl Babiuk beloved husband of Jean Babiuk passed away at the Preeceville Hospital on Saturday, February 25, 2017.
Charles “Carl” Babiuk was born on April 11, 1929, in Sturgis, Saskatchewan to John and Elizabeth (nee Nahnybida) Babiuk. Carl grew up in a family of thirteen. He had six brothers - Michael, William (Ruth), Terry (Anne), Ben (Nancy), John (Yvonne), Mark (Bernadette) and six sisters – Nel (Bernie), Lucille (Frank), Mary (Allan), Lovitte, Hope (Ron), Theresa.
On November 10, 1962, Carl married the love of his life, Jean Mattison. After living in Regina, Carl and Jean made Sturgis their home in 1963. The two of them raised four children – Carla (Perry), Keith (Trudy), Cory (Tammy), Kristen (Conrad); they also have eleven grandchildren, Justin (Dawn), Brooke (Brayden), Kylie, Mason, Allie, Koy, Bo, Brynn, Shae, Trae, Drae and one great grandchild, Jaxton.
Carl loved being with his family. Many hours were spent fishing, hunting and camping together. He had a special place in his heart for McBride Lake and many memories were made there. Carl always had lot of time and patience for everyone around him. He instilled the importance of family on each of his children. It was because of him and Jean that they all moved back to Sturgis to raise their children and be part of the community. Carl would give the shirt off his back if someone needed it. He never complained and when asked how he was he always replied with “a hundred and two”. His children and grandchildren were his life and he was truly proud of each and every one of them.
Carl worked at various jobs in his lifetime. Thirty of his employment years were spent at the Bus Garage in Sturgis as a mechanic and shop foreman. After retiring from there in 1993, he kept busy cutting wood, gardening, making sausage, fixing chain saws, lawn mowers, and quads. For the past twelve years he has been the heart of the curling rink. He spent endless hours helping his sons with the making of the ice, cleaning and doing all that needed to be done. He was proud of the rink and the ice that was made. Carl also enjoyed being at the hunting camp. He always had the fire stoked and the place cleaned. He treasured all of the friendships that were made there.
Carl was a home body. His kids always said that they may not know where mom is but they knew dad was at home. They always knew he was only a phone call away. He loved watching westerns, wrestling, sports, and cheering for the opposite team of his family. He was a huge fan of the Toronto Maple Leafs, the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, and the Blue Jays.
Five years ago, a new love entered Carl and Jean’s life. She was appropriately named Princess and was treated as one. Carl always giggled at how spoiled she was – only drinking fresh water right after it was poured and a specific treat at certain times. His dog became his good friend and was even able to take over his chair. She, along with all his family and friends are lost without him.
Carl will be truly missed as he was his family’s hero, their rock, and best friend.
A Prayer Service was held on Thursday, March 2, 2017 from Grace United Church in Sturgis with Rev. Miles Russell officiating. Interment followed in the Sturgis Community Cemetery with all of Carl’s children and grandchildren serving as the urnbearers.
Memorials in memory of Carl may be made to the charity of one’s choice as gifts of remembrance.
Arrangements were entrusted to Preeceville Funeral Home.
