Dean Edwin Paul

November 17, 1943 ~ July 31, 2017 (age 73) 73 Years Old


PAUL – Dean Paul beloved husband of Phyllis Paul of Preeceville passed away peacefully on July 31, 2017 at the Pasqua Hospital in Regina, with his loving family by his side.

     Dean Edwin Paul was born on November 17, 1943 in Preeceville to John Edwin Paul and Esther Paul (nee Homstol). After completing his education in Preeceville, he followed in his father’s footsteps and received his Bachelor of Science degree in Pharmacy with honours in 1966. He returned to Preeceville and joined his father at Paul’s Drugs to continue the family legacy. Pharmacy was Dean’s passion. He enjoyed spending many hours at the store, filling prescriptions and keeping all of his customers happy. Dean served as a licensed pharmacist for over fifty years, from 1966 – 2016.

    As a pillar of the community Dean held the position of Alderman for the Town of Preeceville from 1976-1988. He worked diligently to give back to the community he grew in and continued to make the town great. He was also a Lion’s Club member for over ten years and was the club’s president in 1973.

     On August 26, 1967, married the love of his life and best friend, Phyllis Surcon.  Dean and Phyllis were blessed with a wonderful son, Chad Edwin in 1973, Ashley Kyle (deceased at birth), and a beautiful daughter Dana Lee in 1978. Raising their children with the values of community, a strong work ethic and a full sports schedule.

     As we all know Dean was an avid sports enthusiast enjoying curling, hockey, baseball (pitcher for the Preeceville Pats), snowmobiling and most importantly golf. Dean coached minor hockey and minor baseball from 1978 – 1988.

     In 2001, Dean semi-retired and became a snowbird. Phyllis and Dean could be found travelling south in their fifth wheel. Often joined by his sister Lois and her husband Franklin. In 2003, Dean and Phyllis set down roots and purchased a winter home in Mesa Arizona. They spent 14 years in the sunny south, mainly on the golf course. In 2005, Dean and Phyllis sold their home in Preeceville and built their retirement home on family land at Crystal Lake. Dean and Phyllis were blessed with many new friends they met in Arizona and at Crystal Lake.

     Dean was predeceased by his son Ashley (in infancy) , his parents John and Esther, his brother Vern, nephews Trent and Wade Paul, and his in laws Steve and Nellie Surcon. Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife Phyllis who would have celebrated their 50th anniversary together on August 26,  his son Chad  (Michelle), one special grand daughter Paytn, his daughter Dana Lee, sister in law Mae Paul, niece Micki, brother Clair (Bonnie), and their children Cory (Candace) Paul, Shannon (Jesse) Nelson, Jo-Ann (Dennis) Mann, Brent (Theresa) Mann, Gwen (Lawrence) Premack and Melissa Mann, his sister Lois( Franklin) Marsh, brother in law Donald (Penny) Surcon and their daughter Trish (Sylvain) Brissonnet, his aunt Lorna Homstol and Godmother Gladys Dalton. He will also be missed by the past and present staff at Paul’s Drugs and all of his and Phyllis’ dear friends.  

     Funeral Services were held on Friday, August 4, 2017 at 11:00 am from St. John Lutheran Church in Preeceville with Pastor Hein Bertram officiating.  Words of Remembrance were shared by Greig Homstol. The organist Barb Melsness led the congregation in the singing of the hymns, ‘I Know That My Redeemer Lives!’, ‘Amazing Grace’ and ‘My God How Wonderful Thou Art’. Honourary Bearers were all of the past and present staff of Paul’s Drugs and all those who shared in his special life. Interment followed in the Preeceville Community Cemetery with Franklin Marsh, Dennis Mann, Ken Kvern, Reid Homstol, Don Surcon and Dennis Osatiuk serving as the casketbearers.
