Donald Phelan Obituary

PHELAN – Donald Phelan husband of the Late Bernice Phelan of Sturgis passed away Friday, October 9, 2020. He was 88 years of age.

  Donald James Phelan was born at Nipawin Hospital in Nipawin, SK on February 21, 1932 and grew up on the farm in the Pine Torch District, North of Nipawin and White Fox, SK. He was the only child of Donald John and Dulcie Phelan (nee Trotter) of White Fox area, SK.

  Don married Mary Bernice Allen on June 30th, 1952.  They lived in Hudson Bay, SK and moved to Sturgis, SK. in 1960 when Mary was hired by the Sturgis School Unit to teach in Preeceville, SK and Don worked for Sask. Forest Products as a Supervisor at Sturgis, SK.

  In the years after in Sturgis Don had the Ford Dealership from 1963 – 1970, operated a trucking & logging company from 1970 – 1975, operated a trucking & gravel crushing company from 1975 to 1990 and operated Phelan Transport Ltd. from 1990 to 2004 hauling grain, fertilizer and equipment. In 2004 Don downsized his Company and semi-retired but continued to haul equipment and gravel until 2012 when he was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s and moved from his acreage outside Sturgis to the Sturgis Care Home where he spent a couple of years and was then moved to Invermay Health Centre where he resided until he passed away on Friday, October 9th, 2020.

   Don’s wife Mary passed away in August, 1999. Don is survived by his 2 children, Colleen (Ray) Head of Calgary, AB and Tim (Deanna) of Edmonton, AB. Don also has 4 grandchildren, Jennifer (Colleen), Amy, Stephanie & Derek (Tim), 3 great-granddaughters (Jennifer), Jade, Brooklyn and Ciera and 3 great-great grandchildren (Jade) Carson, Aiyanna & Aiden.

   A Funeral Service was held for family on Tuesday, October 20, 2020 from the Chapel of Preeceville Funeral Home with Rev. Miles Russell of Grace United Church officiating. Interment followed in the Sturgis Community Cemetery with Colleen Head, Tim Phelan, Ray Head and Derrick Phelan serving as the casketbearers. Memorials in memory of Don may be made to the Invermay Health Centre as gifts of remembrance.
