Welcome to the memorial page for

Fred Lorne Turchinetz

January 24, 1943 ~ October 5, 2017 (age 74) 74 Years Old

Fred Turchinetz beloved husband of Gloria Turchinetz of Preeceville, formerly of the Endeavour district passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, on Friday, October 5, 2017 at the Yorkton Regional Health Centre. He was seventy four years of age.

Fred was born on January 24th, 1943, in Flin Flon, Manitoba.  His parents, George and Doreen (nee Harris) Turchinetz, soon moved to a farm near Usherville where Fred grew up; working on the farm, hunting, trapping and playing baseball.  In the early 1960s, he left the province in search of work.  During this time, he worked with CN, in the mines around Snow Lake, Manitoba, and as a logger around Terrace, B.C.

On April 27, 1968, he married Gloria Fialkowski in Usherville.  They settled on the Turchinetz family farm, where they lived until 2013.

Fred’s love of nature and the outdoors led him to a career working for the Department of Natural Resources.  He worked for them for 35 years in various capacities – fire-tower watchman (Ushta and Peiwei towers), forest fire fighter, conservation officer, check-station attendant, maintenance man at Greenwater Park and finally on the service crew at the Fire Center at Hudson Bay.

His job with the Department was seasonal, which meant that Fred worked other jobs in the fall and winter months.  He worked many winters as a trapper and logger.  Later on he also worked as a hunting guide.  Through all four seasons Fred also maintained and worked the family farm.

Fred loved nature and the outdoors - fishing, hunting and nature watching.  He enjoyed photography and had a keen interest in history.  Later on he was a proud member of the Endeavour Lions Club. Family was always important to Fred, spending much of his leisure time with his wife and kids.  Later in life, he loved spending time with his grandchildren.

Fred was predeceased by his father, George Turchinetz and his mother, Doreen (Harris) Turchinetz.  He is survived by his devoted wife of 49 years, Gloria, and his sons, Wayne and Dean (Mandy), along with his grandchildren Jakob and Riely Turchinetz.

He touched many with his humble, caring and humorous approach to life.  His toughness and bravery in the face of illness was inspiring. Fred had a large extended family, and many, many friends that he had made over the years. He will be missed, but he has left us with enough memories that will keep him with us always.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks those who wish, to make a donation in Fred’s name to Canadian Diabetes Society or the Kidney Foundation of Canada.

A Family Gathering was held on Thursday, October 12, 2017 at the Harris Cemetery in the Endeavour district.
