Harry Shermet

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Harry Shermet, loving husband to Patricia Shermet, of Hyas, on Sunday, May 31, 2026. He was 70 years of age.

Visitation will be held on Saturday, June 6, 2026, from 10:00-11:00 a.m., at The Church of God in Christ, Mennonite Church north of Hyas.

The Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, June 6, at 11:00 a.m. from The Church of God in Christ, Mennonite Church.

Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

Those wishing to make donations in memory of Harry, may make them to Harry's family (c/o Box 217, Endeavour, SK, S0A 0W0) to help ease the financial burden of his unexpected passing. 

    Harry Edward Joseph Shermet was born on April 23, 1956, in Cornwall, Ontario, the only child of Shirlee (Greene) and Daniel Shermet. He attended school in Oshawa, Ontario. He took his private pilot’s license at 16 years of age, and met Patricia Jean Shankland the same year. They were married three years later on October 24, 1975 in Brooklin, Ontario. Harry and Patty were blessed with three children, Matthew, Ashlee and Aimee.

    Harry started his career as a pilot in Ontario, and Manitoba. Over the years, Harry worked hard to earn all the endorsements related to flying. These included getting his helicopter license, float plane endorsement, his tickets to fight fires and fly at night to name a few. Harry loved being a pilot and went where the work was.

    Harry worked in the north in Ontario, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta and the Northwest Territories. He flew water bombers in Alberta, and flew for oil companies off the coast of Newfoundland. Along the way, Harry enjoyed meeting people at the various pilot jobs that he did. His many jobs involved a variety of things like flying people to remote jobsites in Canada’s northern mines, flying tourists to remote outfitting camps on the lakes of the Canadian Sheild, and he flew supplies to isolated northern jobsites and communities.

    Harry never really retired. He worked hard to keep all his endorsements up to date. He was a lifelong learner that enjoyed the challenge of learning new things. Throughout his life he took a great interest in mechanics and liked to tinker and fix all sorts of things. Harry loved animals, and he loved the life that he built in Hyas, as he spent time visiting with neighbors and friends. Harry especially enjoyed being a part of the Hyas Mennonite Church and the Hyas Golden Age Society.

    Harry is predeceased by his parents, Daniel Edward and Shirlee Jean Gertrude (Greene) Shermet.

    Harry will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Patricia (Shankland) Shermet; son, Matthew Shermet; daughters, Aimee Shermet, Ashlee (Leslie) Boychuk Shermet; grandchildren, Savannah Rayne Shermet, Karlee Boychuk, and Karson Boychuk as well as his many cousins, friends and neighbors.
