JOHNSON - Larry Johnson of Sturgis passed away at his home on June 16, 2017.
Glen Larry Johnson (Kojack) was born on December 3, 1940, in Yorkton, Saskatchewan to John and Lily (Janzen) Johnson. Larry was raised in Sturgis, along with his sisters Loretta and Beverly and his brother Doug. Larry told many stories about his shenanigans while growing up, though he rarely told the story of how he lost his hair. Larry travelled and worked in many places in his younger days. He and Tiny would often take to the road together, always ending back home in Sturgis. Larry worked in logging, mining, and moving and road construction. Larry began a gravel business with his dad and brother Doug, until John retired in 1974. Larry continued hauling gravel and trucking in road construction until he retired in 2000.
Larry met Eleanor in 1975. Larry began to raise Ivar and they soon had their other children Jackie, James and Darcy. Eleanor’s sister Bernelda also was raised along with the other kids. Larry raised his family spending any spare time and summers at either McBride Lake or Townsend Lake. Larry was a hard worker and good provider for his family. He attended every game that he could and was so proud to watch all 3 of his sons play hockey. After Larry and Eleanor separated, he met Selene in 1991 and they added Selene’s children to the mix. They made one more addition to the family, Taylor in 1995.
Since retiring, there was no good reason to leave Sturgis, except to go to McBride Lake, which was Larry’s second home and favourite place to be. If he wasn’t at home, he was at the lake. Larry loved fishing and camping and not many could make it past his camper without stopping for one drink. Larry knew the lake, every fish hole, every log, every rock. Larry ran the McBride campground for a few years, and he took great pride in that. Larry was always happy to have people stop by his site at the lake, even to just exchange a quick fishing story. Larry was very funny and his stories or jokes or quick remarks will be missed.
Besides fishing, Larry enjoyed tinkering, fixing or inventing things, listening to classic country music, scratching lottery tickets, watching curling and TV, and of course - he spent a lot of time mastering his recipe down in his lab. Larry was also a good singer, problem-solver, and story-teller. For every mile he has travelled on land or on the lake, he has a 20-minute story that goes along with it. Larry had a tool for everything, he never threw anything away. Dad kept every card, every note, every bill, every receipt, and every newspaper clipping of his children and grandchildren. He was so proud of his grandchildren, whom he wanted to take fishing as his grandfather took him.
Larry was predeceased by his brother Doug in 1976; his parents Johnny in 1989 and Lily in 2002; his cousin Harold (Tiny) Johnson in 2011; his sons Ivar Brass in 2007 and Darcy Johnson in 2016.
Larry is survived by his; daughter, Jacqueline (Jazzlynn and Waylan) of Yorkton; son, James and Shawna (Makayla and Nate) of Sturgis; daughter, Taylor (Ryder) of Buchanan; daughter-in-law, Charity (Kreeo, Bo and Hannah) of Yorkton; sisters, Beverly (Tony) Kaasten of Calgary and Loretta (Jack) Cook of Saskatoon. Larry is also survived by his children’s mothers, Eleanor Brazeau and Selene Kiltau (Elissa, Shannon); his beloved dog Felix; numerous nieces and nephews, in-laws, out-laws and friends. Dad will be missed by all who knew him.
