Laurel Kovacs Obituary

KOVACS-The Family of Mrs. Laurel Kovacs, widow of the late Ernie Kovacs, sadly announce her passing on Friday, September 6, 2024. She was 85 years of age.

Laurel Elizabeth was born in Preeceville, SK, to Edwin and Laura (Scharfenberg) Hovey, on August 9th, 1939. She grew up on a farm SW of Endeavour with her three siblings. Laurel attended school in Sturgis till Grade 10 when she was needed to help on the farm. On December 14, 1963, Laurel married Ernie Kovacs. They had four children, Marc, Coralea, Valerie and Linda. Laurel spent her days caring for her family, and assisting Ernie on the farm. Her days were full as she cared for her yard and large garden, preserved garden produce and prepared meals. While Ernie worked in the bush during the week, Laurel was in charge of taking care of the farm. She was busy with the many chores that needed to be done while Ernie was at work. She fed the pigs, chickens and turkeys, butchered the meat birds, and collected eggs from the laying hens to sell to provide income for her family. Laurel also enjoyed knitting and crocheting. Laurel had fond memories of a trip to Alaska, the Yukon and North West Territories and would have liked to return. In July of 2000 Laurel and Ernie sold the farm and moved into Sturgis, where Laurel lived until she moved to the Preeceville Long Term Care Centre in April of 2023.

Laurel was predeceased by her husband, Ernie; infant brother, Bryon; and sister-in-law, Rose Hovey.

She will be lovingly remembered by her son, Marc (Monica) Kovacs; daughters, Coralea (Murray) Stroeder, Valerie (Greg) Skurdal, and Linda Kovacs; grandchildren, Marshall, Merlin, Shantelle, Faith, Summer, Justin, Kristen, Everett, Sarah and Emily; great- grandchildren, Rena and Tobias; and siblings, Clifton (Peggy) Hovey, Dennis Hovey, and Jeanette Breden.

A Graveside Service was held on Saturday, September 14, 2024, at the Endeavour Community Cemetery with Bradley Steppan officiating.  Justin Skurdal served as the urn bearer. Memorials may be made to Preeceville Long Term Care Auxiliary (c/o Box 482, Preeceville, SK, S0A 3B0) as gifts of remembrance.
