Prayers for Mrs. Lorna Brodziak of Saskatoon, formerly of Preeceville and the Buchanan District, wife of the Late Walter Brodziak, will be held on Friday at 7:00 P.M. from Holy Transfiguration Ukrainian Catholic Church in Preeceville.
The Funeral Service will be held Saturday, October 18, 2025, at 10:00 AM from Holy Transfiguration Ukrainian Catholic Church Preeceville with Rev. Fr. Ivan Simko officiating. Burial to follow in the Ukrainian Catholic Cemetery in Preeceville.
Lorna was born April 12, 1933 to Metro Sakundiak and Nettie Kuzmar in the Buchanan district. The eldest of 7 in the family, she attended Dydland School from grades 1-8. She went out working to Ninette, Manitoba in a sanitarium for a short time. She returned home to help out at the family farm due to her mother's health. Lorna married Walter Brodziak July 29, 1951 at St Peter and Paul's Ukrainian Catholic Church in Rama. Walter being a CN railroad employee, they lived in Rama, Calder, Buchanan, Kuroki, and moved to Preeceville in 1969. Lorna was employed by the Canora Courier-Preeceville Progress as a newspaper reporter/editor for 25 years. She was never too busy to complete a job or cover an event, regardless of the hour of the day or night.
She was an avid curler and took great interest in gardening, sewing, quilting, cooking for weddings and banquets, decorating wedding cakes, making perogies and cabbage rolls and homemade macaroni. She had a deep faith in keeping up the tradition for Ukrainian Christmas and Easter. Lorna had a great love for old time and pattern dancing, as well as square dancing for 20 years. She had a great appreciation for music.
Lorna was president of the Holy Transfiguration Ukrainian Catholic Church for 16 years. She had a love for history and was instrumental in publishing the school history book "Dydland Echo", family history book "Sakundiak Reflections", Town of Preeceville "Lines of the Past".
Highlights of her life were 2 trips to Ukraine to visit the land of her mother and grandparents in 1977 and again in 1995. Another joyful trip was to Mexico on her 80th birthday at the request of her children.
In retirement after meeting a friend and dance partner, Ed Kwasnik, she took great interest in square dancing. She was president of the Gateway Twirlers club in Sturgis and member of the Guys and Darlings in Saskatoon. They travelled for square dancing to Vancouver, and different areas in Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and USA. Lorna was secretary/treasurer for the Preeceville and District Heritage museum for 8 years and was one of the co-founders of the museum and sponsored the building of the clay oven.
A loving mother, grandmother, and great grandmother (baba), Lorna treasured the times she spent with her family. Due to health conditions, she took up residence at St. Vladimir's Terrace in Saskatoon in August of 2015.
Predeceased by her father Metro in 1986, husband Walter in 1989, mother Nettie in 2011, brother Lorne in 2013, and brother Joseph in 2021. She leaves to mourn her passing and cherish her memory 5 amazing children, Karen (Brian) MacPherson, Sharon (Gerald) Fincaryk, Brian (Cindy) Brodziak, Charlene (Tim) Morson, Kathy (Michael) Tschetter. Beautiful grandchildren Shawn MacPherson, Jarvis MacPherson, Tara (Patrick) Garman, Dawn (Andrew) Spratt, Melanie Fincaryk (Dan), Bradley Fincaryk (Cindy), Penny Brodziak (Les), Justin (Kasia) Brodziak, Rebecca (Evan) Hughes, Raquel Brodziak (Mark), Callie (Ryan) Landstad, Colton Swiderski, Jason Tschetter, Shantelle Tschetter (Brennen), and Breana Tschetter. And her charming, lovable great-grandchildren. James and Evan MacPherson, Declan Garman, Aiden and Peyton Landstad, Liliya Gray, Gracelyn Fuchs, Kailee (J.J.), Levi, and Logan Allen, Alissa, Henry, and Lucy Brodziak, Elijah Fincaryk-Arberry, Remi, Maxwell, and Quinn Hughes. Her siblings, 1 brother Ivan (Joan) Sakundiak, 3 sisters Marge Sakundiak, Phyllis (Barry) Rainey, and Gloria (Danny) Lischynski, and sisters-in-law Olga Sakundiak and Mildred Sakundiak, and numerous nieces and nephews. She was deeply loved and will be forever missed.
