Mervin Goossen Obituary

The family of Mervin Goossen, long-time resident of Group Home 4 in Preeceville, announce his passing on Wednesday, April 9. He was 60 years of age.

A Prayer Service was held on Sunday, April 13, from the Chapel of Preeceville Funeral Home.

Funeral Services were held on Monday, April 14, from North Star Mennonite Church, North of Hyas.

The Committal followed in the North Star Mennonite Church Cemetery.

Memorial donations in memory of Mervin may be made to Mackenzie Society (Box 983, Preeceville, SK  S0A 3B0) as gifts of remembrance.

Mervin Gene Goossen was born on June 28, 1964, in Ganado, Arizona, to Irvy and Imogene Goossen. When Mervin was born, it soon became apparent that he was one of God's special children. He was welcomed and lovingly cared for by his mother, father and big sister, Alta. Throughout the years he went to different schools and workshops for those with special needs, making many friends along the way. He spent his growing up years in Arizona, later moving to Kansas. After his parents passed away he moved to Saskatchewan to be near his sister.

Uncle Mervin enjoyed the simple things in life. He had a special spot in his heart for young children and always had a hug for them. He was the happiest when surrounded by family and friends. You would often find him with a plastic spoon in one hand and a pencil in the other, just watching the action. He always enjoyed camping, picnics and playing in the water. He could shoot baskets perfectly without seeming to aim. He also loved a good bowl of ice cream.

Although Uncle Mervin could not speak, he communicated how he felt and what he wanted. He remembered people and would give a hearty handshake.

In many ways, he helped those of us who loved him to slow down, be a little kinder and enriched our lives. Uncle Mervin loved listening to singing and we rejoice that he has joined the never ending song in Heaven.

He will be missed by his sister Alta and Ken Penner, one nephew, Braden and Camilla Penner, three nieces, Melissa and David Penner, Krysten and Hanley Fehr, Lindsey and Ben Buhler, five great nephews and seven great nieces. His buddies, Dennis and Chad, and the rest of his Mackenzie family.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

A special thank you to his wonderful care givers, Angie Pawliw and all the rest of the workers at Group Home Four. We are grateful for the excellent care he received.

Arrangements for Mervin Goossen were entrusted to Preeceville Funeral Home.
