Stella was born to Peter and Kzena (Baran) Stefanyshyn, on April 27, 1925, on the family farm in the Buchanan District. Stella had four brothers. She attended school in Halycry for a short time and then attended the Lone Spruce School in the Municipality of Invermay. When Stella completed school, she worked for local farmers during the harvest season. She also worked at the local cafes. During the war, she went to work in a cannery in Vernon, BC. After the war, Stella came home and worked in Yorkton at the Broadway Café. In 1958, she moved to Winnipeg and worked in the Ray-O-Vac Battery Factory. Stella moved back to Hazel Dell to help her mother when her health began to fail. During this time, she worked for three years at the Preeceville Hatchery. After the hatchery closed, she stayed and cared for her parents, as well as her brother John. She lived in Hazel Dell for many years and then sold her home and moved to an apartment in Preeceville for her retirement years. In her later years she lived at the Preeceville Manor, the Preeceville Personal Care Home and finally, at the Preeceville and District Health Centre-Long Term Care. Stella loved cooking, baking, sewing, and knitting. She enjoyed her garden and tending her flower beds as well as socializing, writing letters and helping her community. She enjoyed adventures and liked to travel. One of Stella’s most rewarding experiences was going for a couple of months to Ukraine in 1967. She also took her mother to Montreal, where she visited her Uncle Mike. Stella is predeceased by her parents, Peter and Kzena; brothers, Mike, Walter, Bill, and John; and nephew, David Stefanyshyn.
